DICKIE

Dickie is an animation series based on a comic-strip character developed by Pieter De Poortere. In a series of two-minute short episodes, we follow the exploits of a pitiful antihero with a big moustache who draws the short straw in every story. Dickie represents the universal loser. Whether he is a farmer or a pirate, a knight or an astronaut, things always end badly for him, to the great amusement of the viewer. We recognise our own shortcomings and weaknesses in Dickie’s character, and this recognition means that we also feel sympathy for this tragic figure.In his original form, Dickie was a farmer and the stories took place in and around the farm. But Dickie has evolved to become a universal character, who can be transported to any time or place. The only thing that stays the same is his round head, characteristic moustache and the fact that things always end up going wrong for him. Dickie holds up a mirror to our society. The series’ sometimes caustic humour and its many references to historical facts, culture or film mean that it is suitable for viewers aged 16 plus.
